Mizoram State Museum
The Mizoram State Museum is in Aizawl, Mizoram, India. It is an ethnographic
museum with multipurpose collections on display. There are five galleries:
Textile Gallery, Ethnology, History, Anthropology, Natural History, and
Archeology Terrace. The collection occupies four floors.
The museum was established in April 1977 by the Tribal Research Institute
under Education Department. In 1989 it came under Art and Culture
department, up till now.
The museum was earlier housed in a rented building but on 14 July 1990 it
was moved to a new building, at Mc Donald Hill. The museum galleries have
undergone a lot of renovation under the care of Indian Museum, Kolkata.
Financial assistance was also received from Victoria Memorial, Kolkata.
This museum spells out record of 2500 items, each of which confirms the
multifarious past and traditional background of Mizoram. The entire gallery
at the ethnological museum is dedicated to tribes of Mizoram.
Timing: Monday - Friday: 9.00 am to 5.00 pm / Saturday: 9.00 am - 1.00 pm.
Closed on Sunday.
Getting There
Mizoram State Museum is positioned close to the Chief Minister's
Bungalow at Macdonald Hill, Zarkawt.
Aizawl is connected by roads with various major cities of Mizoram. It is
connected by road with Silchar through National Highway 54 (NH54), with
Agartala through National Highway 40 (NH40) and with Imphal through National
Highway 150 (NH150). Various bus routes run within the city along with the
taxis that ply the roads, making it very convenient for the locals to travel
within the city.
Silchar is the nearest railway station to Aizawl which is only 178 km away
from the city. Local trains are also available to Lumding from here. Mizoram
state transport buses ply between Aizawl and Silchar daily.
Aizawl is served by
Lengpui Airport, located 35 km northwest of the city. Currently Air
India are operating scheduled flights daily at
Lengpui Airport to
Imphal and Kolkata. Jet Airways also provide scheduled flights to Guwahati
and Kolkata from this Airport three flights weekly.
