Martyrs' Tomb

Language is the identity of a person. And, if a language is not given the status it deserves, it is quite natural to expect the population that speaks the language to protest.

Such was the circumstance in Silchar, when Bengali speaking population had to protest against the local government’s decision to make Assamese the only official language ignoring the significant percentage of Bengali people living in the state.

On 19 May 1961, during the Bengali Language Movement in Barak Valley, 11 martyrs were gunned down brutally, by the state police. It is in the memory of these 11 bravehearts that the Martyrs' Tomb, also known as the Shahid Minar, stands at the corner of the famous Gandhi Bag in Silchar.

The date, 19th of May is remembered as the Bengali Language Martyr day in Barak Valley and all over Assam.

This tombstone was built over the ashes of the brave men and women who chose to fight unto death for their right to get formal education in their mother tongue in the free country.
