Santala Devi Temple
Right above the Nun Nadi in Dehradun, Santala Devi Temple is a center of
faith for the devotees. Located in between dense green forest at a distance
of 15 km from Dehradun city in Santur Garh, Santaula Devi and her brother
are the dieties of the temple.
A religiously significant temple in Dehradun, Santala Devi temple is also
called by other names, like Santaura Devi temple, Santaula Devi temple. This
temple is one of most visited place in Dehradun. At the temple, Sanatala
Devi is praised along with her brother. It is believed that on realization
that they would not be able to fight with Mughal Army, Santala Devi and her
brother decided to abandoned their weapons and pray to God. As they were
praying, a sudden light flickered and they turn into stones idols.
After the incident a shrine was built in the fort itself. It was the day of
Saturday (Shaniwaar) when they turns into stones images. Hundreds of
devotees visit Santala Devi Temple to take the blessings of the Goddess
Santala Devi and her brother. On every Saturday, number of devotees visiting
increases manifolds as it is regarded as the day of Goddess Santala.
Getting There
Santala Devi Temple is located at about 15 Kms from Dehradun city. One can
reach at the the temple by utilizing the bus facilities till Jaitunwala and
further 2 Kms drive to Punjabiwala by a jeep or taxi. After a trek of 2 kms,
one can reach to the Santala Devi temple and
nearby rail is at Dehradun railway station (11 kms) and airport at Jolly Grant
Airport (31 kms).
