Tocklai Tea Research Institute is amongst the world’s largest as
well as oldest tea research stations. Established in 1911, the
centre has helped the world gain more scientific knowledge on tea.
Various researches on the cultivation and processing of tea are
conducted here.
The initial construction of a laboratory and two bungalows was
funded by tea industry, subsidized by the national government of
India, and the Indian states of Assam and Bengal.
The centre aims to enhance tea’s nutritional value and conducts
researches towards achieving it. The eight research departments of
the centre are soil, plant production, agricultural economics,
botany, agronomy, biochemistry, engineering and manufacturing,
statistics and tea tasting. |

The formation of the Tea Research Association (TRA) in 1964 with
Tocklai at the centre of all activities further expanded the horizon of
tea research to cover the entire Northeast India. Research on all
aspects of tea cultivation and processing is carried out at Tocklai Tea
Research Institute, Jorhat the oldest and the largest research station
of its kind in the world.
Transfer of technology to its member estates is carried out through
its advisory network covering 1,076 tea estates occupying 341,049
hectares (1,317 sq mi) of land spread over The South Bank, North Bank,
Upper Assam, Cachar, Tripura, Dooars, Darjeeling and Terai.

Station named as Jorhat Railway Station which is connected to the major
cities of Assam. It is linked with the cities like Mariani, Guwahati and
Kamakhya through Jttn Intercity, Jan Shatabdi Express and Ghy Intercity.

known as Rowraih Airport), is located 7 km away from the Jorhat city center.
Jorhat Airport is well
connected to a spectrum of cities in the country such as Bangalore, Guwahati
