Some people even associate
the name with the event of Lord Buddha’s death. Tourists from all over
visit the Ramabhar Stupa in Kushinagar which has carefully treasured the
remnants of history.
The stupa is 49 mts. high,
resting on a circular plinth with a huge circular drum having a diameter
of 34.14mts. at the top and 47.24 mts. at the base with two or more
terraces. It is an oblong mound crowned by a brick of stupa and
surrounded by the garden.
Some ruins of the Chaitya
have been excavated in the south-east of the stupa. The stupa was
renovated later by Ashoka, the Great. The main stupa is surrounded by
subsidiary structures besides votive stupas. A good number of clay
seals, ornamental bricks etc. have been recovered in the excavations.
Getting There
You can easily get regular trains
and buses from other major cities of the country to Kushinagar. Kushinagar
is located on the National Highways 28 which connects the city with the
other parts of the state. The city is connected to Varanasi, Lucknow,
Kanpur, Patna, Jhansi and Gorakhpur and other places in Uttar Pradesh.
You can avail the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation buses
as well as the other buses.
Nearest airport is
Gorakhpur
Airport, located 46 km away. Gorakhpur Railway Station is located 51
km away from Kushinagar.
Taxis, Auto Rickshaw,
and City Bus form the major local transport for Kushinagar. One can also
avail local buses and coaches which transport tourists to the various
destinations.
