Kachari Fort

Located in Khaspur, about 20 kms from Silchar is the Kachari Fort or Kachari Palace amidst the ruins of the ancient capital of Kachari Kings.

The fort was the royal seat of the Bodo-Kachari dynasty and was constructed around 1690 A.D. A popular tourist destination, the main attractions of the area include the old temples and the Sun and Lion gate, each holding immense historical importance.

Sadly, the original palace now lies ruined and damaged, but people can still see the main entrance gate, the Devalaya, the Suryadwar and the intricately carved elephants and other animals over the walls of the fort.

The ruins reflect the influence of non-Aryan culture. During the 18th century, Khaspur was conquered by Kachari rulers following the death of Koch king without heir to the throne. After conquering Khaspur, Kachari rulers made it their capital and constructed Kachari Fort.
