The work
was given to Safi Agha, a Turkish soldier who had been given the title
of Khudawand Khan. This castle which was planned and built between 1540
and 1546 is built on about one acre of land right next to the Trapti
River.
There are large round towers about 12.2m high on all the four corners of
the castle with the walls rising nearly as high as the towers and the
thickness of walls being 4.1 m. All the component units of the masonry
were fastened together with iron strips and the joints were filled-in by
pouring the melted lead to build on a strong castle that could bear the
brunt of the attacks.
Another
attraction of the Surat Castle is the imposing gateway in its east wings
that during its construction time had a door with protruding spikes to
keep the enemy away. There was also a moat (18.3 m wide) on the landward
side of the castle which has now been filled with earth. The moat was
connected to the river in such a way that the moat was always filled
with water and entrance to the castle could only be gained through a
drawbridge. Most of the features of the Surat Castle cannot be seen at
this time but the castle still is one of the main tourist attractions of
the city.
Presently
the castle is converted into government office, though travelers can
visit and view the surrounding area of city and the river Tapti view as
well.
