Shimla State Museum

The Shimla State Museum is situated at the top of Mount Pleasant. Also known as Himachal State Museum and Library, it was built in the year 1974. It was constructed to preserve the cultural richness of the state and to record its rich past. The colonial style building amidst marvelous lawns in itself is an inspiring sight.

It gives you an in depth view of the city’s glorious past. It has a stunning collection of various objects relating to art, cultural anthropology and archaeology. The sculptures, paintings, handicrafts and coins are some of the classic collections found here. The lifestyle and culture of the people of the land are reflected in the paintings. ajasthani and Mughal paintings are awe-inspiring.

 

R Stone works of Bajaura and Masrur belonging to 8th century are seen here. The museum houses a library, which has a wide range of collections of historical books. Various manuscripts are also found in the library.

The Shimla State Museum has various galleries to display their wide range of collections that cover various categories. They are:

Prehistoric Gallery: The gallery houses Stone Age tools and models of extinct creatures.

Archaeology Gallery: Sculptures and terracotta articles belonging to the period of Maurya and Gupta period are on display here.

Wood Carving Gallery: Ruins of wood panels of the ancient temples and other woodcarvings are found here.

And there is more: Wall Painting Gallery, Pahari Miniature Painting Gallery, Rajasthan Miniature Painting Gallery, Photographs Gallery, Numismatic Gallery and Bronze Gallery have excellent collections that throw light on the culture and heritage of the land.

Getting There

Shimla is well-connected by road. National Highway 22 (NH 22) connects Shimla to the nearest big city of Chandigarh. Shimla is connected by road to all the major towns. HRTC (Himachal Road Transport Corporation) runs 24 daily bus services between Delhi to Shimla (including 7 luxury Volvo services). Buses from Chandigarh to Shimla are available round the clock.

The Kalka Railway Station and the Chandigarh Railway Station are the two closest broad gauge railway stations from Shimla, the Kalka Railway Station being the closest one. Both the railway stations connect all the major cities in India.

Nearest airport to Shimla is Shimla Airport, located at Jabarhatti, around 22 km to Shimla. The airport currently not provided any scheduled flight. The nearest domestic / international Airport from Shimla is Chandigarh International Airport at Chandigarh, roughly 3 hours 30 min (113.8 km) drive via NH5 from Shimla. It is well connected with major cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Delhi and Mumbai etc.
