Thiruchendur Murugan Temple

One of the most revered temple of Tuticorin, this temple is dedicated to Lord Muruga. The temple is about 40 kms away from the city, but is well worth the extra travelling.

The temple is one of the most popular in Tamil Nadu and devotees from all over the country visit it to offer prayers. Even if you are not the religious kinds, the sheer size and beauty of the temple will enthrall you. The temple is situated on seashore. Before entering the temple pilgrims either wash their feet or take a bath in the sea.

Temple contains nine Theerthams according to the Sthalapuranam. A bath in any of these Theerthams is believed to confer miraculous benefits on a devotee.

Legend has it that Thiruchendur was the host of intense battle between Lord Muruga and Surapadman (a demon of Viramahendra Puri). The battle resulted in the destruction of the demon and the lord wanted to worship his father Lord Shiva at this place. Thus, Lord Muruga offers his blessing to his devotees in a unique posture where he worships Lord Shiva in this temple.

Getting There

You can easily get regular trains and buses from other major cities of the country to Thoothukudi. Railway Junction at Thoothukudi connects other towns and cities by Train.

Tuticorin Airport (IATA: TCR) is a domestic airport located 16.9 km (10.5 mi) from Thoothukudi, serving the districts of Tuticorin and Tirunelveli in southern Tamil Nadu. It is located 15.6 km west from the city centre on Tuticorin-Tirunelveli Highway 7A.

Taxis, Auto Rickshaw and City Bus form the major local transport for Thoothukudi. One can also avail local buses and coaches which transport tourists to the various destinations.
