Akola City Guides
Akola is a city in the state of Maharashtra located in the Vidarbha region
of West India. It is situated in the Amaravvati division.
Akola, also called Cotton City, is known for its cotton production and is
the largest cotton-producing district in India. The city is also famous for
its pulses (dal), oil, and textile mills. Akola is also known for its
medical facilities. It is a major center for advanced medical treatments,
such as the Elizarov Technique, IVF.
Akola District along with the rest of the Berar province was part of the
legendary kingdom of Vidarbha mentioned in the Mahabharata. Berar also
formed part of the Mauryan Empire during the reign of Asoka. Places to visit
in the city are Akola Fort, Balapur Fort, Narnala Fort, Katepurna Sanctuary,
Narnala Wildlife Sanctuary etc. Several forts are situated in and around the
place. Narnala Fort, Akola Fort and the Balapur Fort are some of the other
major attractions of Aloka and travelling around the city is really a good
experience for tourists.
Akola is well connected by road, railways and air to the rest of the
country.
Akola Railway Junction lies on both the Mumbai-Bhusawal-Howrah rail line and
the Kacheguda-Jaipur rail line. Buses as well as cab facilities are
available from the railway station for further travel.
Akola has its own domestic airport known as the
Akola Airport. The airport
is situated at a distance of about 7 km outside the main city on National
Highway No. 6. Currently there are no scheduled airlines operating at
Akola Airport.
Nagpur Airport is the nearest international airport which is located at a
distance of about 250 km from Akola.
