Akola

Akola District along with the rest of the Berar province was part of the legendary kingdom of Vidarbha mentioned in the Mahabharata. Berar also formed part of the Mauryan Empire during the reign of Asoka. Places to visit in the city are Akola Fort, Balapur Fort, Narnala Fort, Katepurna Sanctuary, Narnala Wildlife Sanctuary etc.

Akola has its own domestic airport known as the Akola Airport. The Airport is situated at a distance of about 7 km outside the main city on National Highway No. 6. Currently there are no scheduled airlines operating at Akola Airport. Nagpur Airport is the nearest international airport which is located at a distance of about 250 km from Akola.
