Bathinda, named after the Bhati Rajput Kings who ruled it, is one of the oldest cities in Punjab and the current administrative headquarters of Bathinda District. It is situated in the Southern part of Punjab State, in the heart of Malwa region. Bathinda district is surrounded with Sirsa and Fatehabad districts (of Haryana) in the south, Sangrur and Mansa districts in the east, Moga in the northeast and Faridkot and Muktsar in the northwest. It covers total area of 3335 sq km and is sixth largest in the state, in terms of area. It consists of 285 villages, out of which 281 are inhabited and 4 are uninhabited; 8 towns and 1 census town. The land is mostly sandy, dotted with sand dunes that have a tendency to shift towards the eastern side.

In the past few years, Bathinda has seen much industrialization and has witnessed a lot of growth. Modern thermal plants, oil refineries and fertilizer factories are being established here. The district has two thermal power plants, namely Guru Nanak Dev Thermal Plant and in Bathinda city and Guru Hargobind Theermal Plant in Lehra Mohabbat. The oil refinery of the district is called the Guru Gobind Singh Oil Refinery. The climate of the Bathinda district is mainly characterized by a very hot summer, a short rainy season and a bracing cold winter.

Bathinda is an oft-visited place in the itinerary of Punjab. Its major attractions include Damdama Sahib, Maiser Khana, Zoological Park, Qila Mubarak and Rose Garden. The Takht Sri Darbar Sahib Damdama Sahib commemorates the site where Guru Gobind Singh prepared the full version of the Sikh scripture called Sri Guru Granth Sahib, in 1705. Qila Mubarak is a Historical National Monument of India, located in the heart of the Bathinda city. Rose Garden is a large, 10-acre garden, popular for the different varieties of rose grown therein. Every tourist place in Bathinda has a unique story of its own and adds to the beauty and tourism aspect of the entire state.

Bathinda is well connected by good roads to Chandigarh, Amritsar and Ludhiana. Bathinda Railway Station are rail station which provides rail connectivity to the city. Bathinda is well linked both within and outside the state of Punjab.

The nearest international airport is Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, located in Amritsar, 180 kms away. It is a three and the half hour drive to Bathinda from Amritsar.
