Maithon Dam, of the Damodar Valley Corporation, constitutes one of the
most accomplished and successful river valley projects of India, which
was a part of the First Five Year Plan after India's independence. The
Damodar Valley region, which Maithon froms a part of, is often hailed as
the Ruhr Valley of India.
Demographics
As of 2001 India census, Maithon had a population of 19,728. Males
constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Maithon has an average
literacy rate of 74%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male
literacy is 81%, and female literacy is 67%. In Maithon, 11% of the
population is under 6 years of age. |

Culture
The Kalyaneshwari temple 6 km away from the Maithon dam is considered to
be the seat to a very powerful deity, Ma Kalyaneshwari. The temple was
erected in the early 1900s.
Getting
There
National
Highway 19 and National Highway 18 are the major highways passing
through Dhanbad. Private and State buses are available for inter-city
travelling.
Dhanbad Junction Railway Station
is the largest railway station in Jharkhand, handling over 100 trains and
100,000+ passengers every day. Dhanbad is also the headquarters of the
Dhanbad Rail Division of the East Central Railway zone. Grand Chord
rail-line that connects Howrah and New Delhi passes through Dhanbad
Junction.
Dhanbad Airport is
the nearest airport that is situated at distance of about 5 km from the
town. Currently, the airport has no scheduled commercial airline flights.
Birsa Munda Airport at Ranchi
is the nearest domestic airport to Dhanbad, it is located around 150 km via
NH320.
