Chitragupta Temple

Chitragupta is a Hindu God who is assigned with the work of keeping records of all the activities of human beings on Earth. He is the one who decides our destinies and whether we will go to heaven or hell after our death according to our good or bad deeds in life. He is one of the many children of Lord Brahma but has a unique identity as he is said to be the only one to be born directly from his body.

This temple in the Khajuraho temple complex is dedicated to Surya Devta or the Sun God. The beautiful architecture of the temple consists of one main temple hall called the Mahamandapa, an entrance porch and most importantly a huge chamber which houses a stunning idol of the Sun God. The figure of the God here is shown riding a chariot drawn by seven horses.

There are other three similar statues on the beams of the temple. One of the most striking features of the temple is the exclusive octagonal shape of the ceiling which is exquisitely carved. It is just amazing! On the walls are the patent Khajuraho sculptures depicting beauty in the form of voluptuous women and couples in love making poses. Another eye-catching figure is the eleven headed Lord Vishnu that increases the charm of the temple even more.

It is a fact that the more you spend time in this temple complex you will just not want to come back.

Getting There

The temple complex, in the Khajuraho village at an elevation of 282 metres (925 ft), is well connected by road, rail and air services. Khajuraho is 34 miles (55 km) to the south of Mahoba, 29 miles (47 km) away from the Chatarpur city to its east, 27 miles (43 km) away from Panna, 400 kilometres (250 mi) away from Jhansi on the north, and 600 kilometres (370 mi) to the south - east of Delhi. It is 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) from the railway station.

Khajuraho is served by Khajuraho Airport (IATA Code: HJR), with services to Delhi, Agra and Mumbai. It is 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) from the temple. During peak tourist season, the frequency of flights to popular destinations is often increased. From the airport to the actual town of Khajuraho, catch a tourist coach, bus or taxi.

Getting Around

Rented cars, taxis, cycle rickshaws and tongas (horse drawn carts) are the common modes of transportation in the town of Khajuraho. The more energetic can hire bicycles or simply walk around town (try not to do this in summer). The western group of temples lies close to the town and you only require transportation to see the other two sets of temples.
