Khajuraho is an ancient
archaeological site in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The erotic
sculptures in the Jain and Hindu temples at Khujaraho are unique and depict
scenes from the Kamasutra. It is one the most well known tourist sites in
the state.
These temples were built during the time of Chandela rulers who claimed to
be the descendents of the moon in the 9th century. The temples were built
over a span of 200 years and the construction finished in 1150 AD.
The temples remained unnoticed for a very long time after the fall of the
Chandela dynasty. They were surrounded by date palms trees and that is how
this place got its name after the Indian name of these trees, ‘Khajur’.
The innovative thoughts and the religious dedication of Chandela rulers have
resulted in the creation of this beautiful wonder of the region. During the
10th to 12th centuries, Chandela Rajput rulers built the beautiful temples
that are also regarded as the architectural marvel. Khajuraho is now one of
the major tourist destinations where only 22 temples out of 85 have remained
which reflects the artistic excellence of the people.
It is believed that the Chandelas might be followers of the Tantrism, a
Hindu cult that believed that earthly gratification is a way of getting
closer to the divine power. Another theory is that the sculptures were a way
of introducing young men who had returned from hermitages to the art of Kama
sutra.
The erotic sculptures are carved outside all the temples and inside a few
next to the deities. Everyday life of women and men is depicted alongside
sexual activities which are believed to be tantric practices of the
forbidden art. Besides erotic depictions, several statues of Hindu and Jain
deities adorn the site.
Getting to Khajuraho is easy with
good road and railway connectivity. Mahoba is the nearest railway station to
Khajuraho which is located at distance of 63 km from Khajuraho. Another
major rail head is Harpalpur which is connected to most of the rail head of
the country. The rail head is situated at a distance of about 90 km from
Khajuraho.
Khajuraho Airport is
the nearest domestic airport connecting it with major cities of India. The
