St Philomenas Church

St. Philomena's Church is a Catholic Church built in honour of St. Philomena in the Diocese of Mysore, India. It was constructed in 1936 using a Neo Gothic style and its architecture was inspired by the Cologne Cathedral in Germany.

Philomena was a young girl martyred at the age of 14. She was a consecrated virgin and as such had spurned the advances of the Roman Emperor Diocletian.

The emperor had her scourged, drowned, shot with arrows… efforts foiled by the work of angles protecting the girl. He finally decapitated her. Her remains were discovered in 1802. The Maharaja of Mysore had the church built in 1936, when he received a relic of the saint from his secretary.

The church was designed by a Frenchman named Daly, which is supposed to be Asia’s second largest, was built in neo-gothic style. It’s floor plan is based on the cross. The elegant twin spires of the church reach 175 feet from the ground. The twin spires of the church are 175 feet (53 m) in height and they resemble the spires of the Cologne Cathedral and also the spires of the St. Patrick's Church in New York.

The main hall (nave) can seat up to 800 people and contains stained glass windows depicting scenes from the birth of Christ, the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, the Resurrection and the Ascension of Christ.
